Arizona has collapsed under the weight of a sudden, devastating outbreak. Fight through relentless hordes, upgrade your arsenal, and traverse treacherous terrain as you struggle to outrun the end of the world—if you can survive.

Phoenician Zombies is a top-down, rogue-like shooter where you traverse through various levels, upgrade your weapons, and defeat different types of enemies to progress. 


The player must traverse the map, defeating enemies along the way, and upgrade their weapons using loot obtained from enemies at a merchant found on the map. Players will battle through areas inspired by Arizona’s cities, exploring room by room to locate and defeat the final boss before progressing to the next level. 


As your sanity worsens and your body aches, the sole thought of a well-deserved vacation rages through and pushes you one step closer to Mexico. Will your will and determination be enough to reach the end of the outbreak and live a peaceful life?

Post-Mortem

What is Phoenician Zombies?   

The idea for Phoenician Zombies started as a simple level-based zombie shooter. As every group would be when pitching ideas for their first game, we were very ambitious for this project and set very high standards for ourselves. 

So what went well? 

  • The bosses and their unique mechanics turned out well
  • The scripting for the guns turned out better than expected
  • None of us are professional artists but the animation for the sprites turned out better than expected
  • The shop was thought to be our biggest challenge but we managed to finish it in time
  • The ambiance of level 2 was a nice addition to the game, changing the atmosphere helped with the overall vibe of the genre
  • The gameplay overall was smooth and easy to follow, but not easy to the point where you could run by everything

What went wrong?

  • We had ideas for throwables, didn't get to it, and scrapped the  idea
  • unintelligent enemies and pathing
  • We wanted each character to be unique with special abilities but we scrapped that idea as well
  • We had to ditch the boss fight for level 2, the original idea was very ambitious where we would run circles around a water tower as we fought a boss
  • Originally we wanted 5 levels and 3 different enemy variety
  • Dialogue was an idea tossed around but we never got to it

What did we learn?

  • As we said, none of us are artists so we had to learn how to draw and animate our characters, which is a skill we are glad we learned along the way
  • Communication and productivity were what got us through this project. Without communication, there would have been plenty of roadblocks and hiccups that we gladly avoided
